Toyota Tops the IIHS 2016 ‘Top Safety Pick+’ Awards

Nine Toyota, Lexus and Scion Models Earn Institute’s Highest Recognition for Crashworthiness and Front Crash Prevention
December 11, 2015
TORRANCE, Calif. (Dec. 11, 2015) — Toyota once again led the industry on the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) annual list of safety awards. Nine Toyota, Lexus and Scion models received the IIHS’ highest award for 2016, the TOP SAFETY PICK+, the most of any manufacturer.

“At Toyota, we continue to focus on the safety and peace of mind of our customers,” said Dino Triantafyllos, Toyota’s North American Chief Quality Officer. “We are proud that IIHS has recognized our commitment to helping protect drivers and passengers.”

According to IIHS, automakers were required to meet tougher criteria to be considered for the 2016 awards. For this year’s TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards, the IIHS recognized the addition of Toyota’s pre-collision system to the Avalon and the RAV4, rating both models superior for front crash prevention. The Scion iA, which received an advanced rating for front crash prevention, was also acknowledged as the only low-priced car sold with a standard pre-collision system.

All award winners were required to achieve good ratings in five crashworthiness tests and have an available front crash prevention system. TOP SAFETY PICK+ award winners must also have a superior- or advanced-rated front crash prevention system with automatic braking capabilities

The full list of 2016 Toyota, Lexus and Scion TOP SAFETY PICK+ winners are: Toyota Prius v, Toyota Camry, Toyota Avalon, Toyota RAV4, Lexus CT 200h, Lexus ES, Lexus RC, Lexus NX, and Scion iA.

Scion iA Collects a Consumer Guide Best Buy Award

November 12, 2015
TORRANCE, Calif., (November 12, 2015) – Scion’s iA sedan has a big trunk…and it’s going to need it to hold its recent awards. The latest accolade for Scion’s first-ever sedan is the Consumer Guide® Automotive Best Buy Award for the subcompact class.

The award represents the best balance of features and value in its class. The editors’ decision centers around room and comfort (which includes passenger and cargo space), power and performance, ride and handling and fit and finish. An extra emphasis is placed on dollar value.

“The Scion iA is loaded with premium amenities and safety features, including a low-speed pre-collision system, which really helps it stand out,” said Scion Vice President Andrew Gilleland. “The iA is a $17,000 car and was developed to be the best buy in its class, so this award from Consumer Guide Automotive validates those efforts.”

Since 1967, Consumer Guide Automotive’s award-winning editorial team has used a rigorous and comprehensive evaluation process to identify the vehicles worthy of serious consideration by a consumer. The editors utilize objective criteria, such as price, features, performance, accommodations, fuel economy, reliability records, and resale value, to assess each vehicle.

2015 NYIAS - 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid 014

Electrifying Development: Refreshed 2016 RAV4 Line Offers Toyota's Eighth Hybrid

-     New 2016 RAV4 Offers Eighth Hybrid in Toyota Lineup
-     Hybrid is Most Powerful and Fuel-Efficient RAV4
-     Refreshed Exterior Styling and Updated Interior Across the RAV4 Lineup
-     New SE Grade Provides Sport-Tuned Suspension and Sportier Styling
November 06, 2015
Looking at the expansive crossover landscape today, Toyota can proudly point to the first RAV4 as the pioneering model two decades ago. The RAV4 was a new kind of vehicle that combined SUV versatility with car-like handling, ride comfort and fuel economy. What began as a niche exploded into a category, with the RAV4 remaining one of its leaders. That leadership shows once again for 2016 with the introduction of the first RAV4 Hybrid as part of a refreshed RAV4 line that also includes a sporty new SE grade.

A few years after the first RAV4 arrived, Toyota began offering what would become the world’s best-selling hybrid vehicle, the Prius. The 2016 RAV4 Hybrid brings the number of Toyota hybrid models to eight (plus six more in the Lexus luxury division). The RAV4 Hybrid is a no compromise vehicle aimed at active young couples who put high fuel economy at the top of a priority list that also includes utility, style, versatility and capability. The fuel economy estimates are expected to be high, as Toyota anticipates to receive EPA ratings of 34 mpg city / 31 mpg highway / 33 mpg combined for both 2016 RAV4 Hybrid models. The RAV4 Hybrid comes in two premium grades: XLE and Limited. The RAV4 gas version comes in four grades: LE, XLE, Limited and the new SE.

Drives Great, Less Fill-Ups
Whoever chooses a 2016 RAV4 Hybrid -- couples, singles or small families -- will be enjoying a more powerful and quicker-accelerating RAV4. The all-weather capability is there, too, as both Hybrid grades come equipped with an Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel-Drive System with intelligence (AWD-i) as standard. A second, independent electric motor drives the rear wheels when needed to help maintain optimal traction.

Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive has long been the platinum standard for seamless hybrid performance, high efficiency and exemplary dependability. Drivers love the way it works, because they cannot feel it working, and that’s the point. The 2016 RAV4 Hybrid combines output from a 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder engine and a small high-torque electric motor through its unique transaxle. The RAV4 Hybrid delivers a jolt of performance from a combined 194 system horsepower. The system varies power between the gas engine and electric motor, or combines both as needed, all seamlessly.

The versatile RAV4 Hybrid will zoom from zero to 60 mph in 8.1 seconds (nearly one second quicker than its gas counterparts), yet what feels most impressive is the response from 206 lb.-ft. of total system torque in everyday driving. Regenerative braking changes the electric motor to a generator that captures the kinetic energy of the still-turning wheels when the brake is applied, storing it in the nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) hybrid battery pack.

The RAV4 Hybrid driver can play an active role in conserving fuel by selecting one of the several operating modes. Choosing ECO mode (on Hybrid and Gas models) optimizes throttle response and air conditioning output to help prioritize fuel economy. In EV mode, the RAV4 Hybrid, under certain conditions, will run solely on the electric motor for up to 0.6 miles at lower speeds (below approximately 25 mph). A Hybrid System Indicator and fuel consumption indicator, located in a 4.2-inch TFT screen, helps coach the driver to operate the vehicle as economically as possible.

New Look Outside
The 2016 RAV4 line ushers in refreshed exterior styling that lends the vehicle a sleeker, more dynamic stance.  A bolder looking front fascia seems to come alive when equipped with the available LED combo of headlights, daytime running lights and Hi-Lo Headlights. The new rocker panels sharpen the sides and tie in restyled front and rear bumpers for a more flowing profile. Available LED taillights add a premium touch.

New front and rear silver skid plate garnishes on most models, new wheel designs and a standard shark fin antenna on all grades further accent the freshened look of the 2016 RAV4. Capping the restyle in high style are three additions to the color palette: Silver Sky Metallic, Black Currant Metallic and Electric Storm Blue.

On some grades, the revised gauge cluster contains an available 4.2-inch TFT multi-information display, and a 7-inch touch-sensitive display audio touch screen is also available. Among new conveniences are LED illumination on the lower center console, a 12V power outlet added to the rear area, and a revised cup holder design to hold tall mugs with handles. There’s also a new holder for sunglasses.

New Safety Tech Everywhere
The 2016 RAV4 will be among the first U.S. models to offer Toyota Safety Sense (TSS), a new multi-feature advanced safety package anchored by automated pre-collision braking. TSS, which is standard on 2016 RAV4 Limited grades (gas and Hybrid) and available on XLE (gas and Hybrid) and SE grades, bundles cutting edge safety technologies including Pre-Collision System (with Forward Collision Warning and automatic emergency brake), Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beams, Pedestrian Pre-Collision System and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. In addition to TSS, RAV4 LE gas and XLE gas and hybrid models will feature a standard Blind Spot Mirror and the SE gas and Limited gas and hybrid grades have a standard Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

The 2016 RAV4 debuts new technologies to bolster convenience, entertainment and information. Smart Key, standard on SE and Limited (gas and Hybrid) grades, and a Homelink® garage door opener (standard on Limited gas and Hybrid grades), add convenience and security. Available front and rear parking sonar helps make parking easy and safe, and now the RAV4 offers the ultimate technology for that purpose, a new Bird’s Eye View Camera with Perimeter Scan. This Toyota-first technology employs four cameras that are mounted on the front, the side mirrors and rear of the vehicle to project a panoramic view of the vehicle’s surroundings on the central seven-inch touch display. The system offers drivers assistance when parallel parking, and when pulling in and out of parking spaces. The Bird’s Eye View Monitor system also debuts a Toyota-first feature called Perimeter Scan, which provides a live rotating 360-degree view around the vehicle, helping the driver to see potential obstacles.

For 2016, the RAV4 XLE and SE feature the standard Scout® GPS Link cell phone-based navigation system (available on LE). And for entertainment, RAV4 XLE, SE and Limited models come equipped with SiriusXM All-Access Radio with a 3-month complimentary trial subscription.

RAV4 SE: Sporty New Look and Attitude
Gaining the versatility of a crossover shouldn't have to mean giving up on sporty driving. The refreshed 2016 Toyota RAV4 line adds an athletic new member to the family, the SE, featuring sport-tuned suspension, 18-inch alloy wheels and paddle shifters for the six-speed automatic transmission. While providing a more dynamic and responsive driving experience, the RAV4 SE shows off its sporty attitude with LED headlights and taillights and exclusive bumper and lower grill design. Its most distinctive exterior feature is the S-Code paint design, which combines one of three available upper colors (Super White, Black Sand Pearl and Electric Storm Blue) over Classic Silver Metallic on the vehicle’s lower trim.

The SE continues the sporty, upscale theme inside with SofTex®-trimmed seats featuring a power driver’s seat (also on Limited) and contrast stitching, and a choice of two interior colors (Black and Black/Cinnamon), along with a Black headliner, Black A&B-pillar covers, sport floor mats and door sill protectors and Gunmetal Gray trim.

The SE instrument panel features twin dials with red illumination and red pointers, along with a standard 4.2-inch color TFT multi-information display.

Where Practicality Meets Fun
The RAV4 gets down the road with authority from a 2.5-liter direct-injection four-cylinder engine that smoothly delivers 176 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 172 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,100 rpm. It’s teamed to a standard six-speed automatic transmission, and the combination yields EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 24 mpg city / 31 mpg highway/26 mpg combined. With Dynamic Torque Control All-Wheel Drive, the EPA estimates are 22/29/25 mpg.

As seen on premium vehicles, the Toyota RAV4 comes with driver-selectable operating modes. Select Eco mode and the RAV4 optimizes powertrain operation to maximize fuel economy. Switch to Sport mode, and you’ll experience sharpened shift timing, throttle response and steering feel.  Downshifting will “blip” the throttle, as the driver in a stick-shift vehicle would do to maintain driving smoothness. On RAV4 models with Dynamic Torque Control All-Wheel Drive, Sport mode also alters torque distribution to enhance agility.

Dynamic Torque Control All-Wheel Drive (AWD)
With standard front-drive, the RAV4 gas model has a special traction helper called Automatic Limited Slip Differential (Auto LSD).  Essentially a second layer of computer logic in the Traction Control system, Auto LSD can be engaged at speeds below 25 mph to provide the function of a mechanical limited-slip differential. Unlike Traction Control, it doesn’t cut into engine power.  This helps give the driver control and distributes power where it’s most effective.  On all RAV4 gas models, standard Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) helps prevent the vehicle from rolling backward when starting off on an incline when the brake pedal is released.  All RAV4 models (except SE) are equipped with standard Trailer Sway Control.  A function of Vehicle Stability Control, Trailer Sway Control helps counteract handling forces that can cause trailer sway during towing by applying brakes to individual wheels.

For maximum traction capability in all conditions, the RAV4 gas models offer the sophisticated Dynamic Torque Control AWD system that’s also offered on the larger Highlander model. Taking input from various sensors (vehicle speed, steering speed and angle, throttle angle and yaw rate), Dynamic Torque Control continuously monitors and actively governs torque distribution to the rear wheels, as needed, via an electromagnetically controlled coupling positioned in the rear differential. Front to rear torque distribution can vary from 100:0 to 50:50, with front-wheel drive automatically engaged under normal driving conditions to help reduce fuel consumption.

When accelerating, Dynamic Torque Control automatically shifts to AWD to help prevent front wheel slippage, or when sensors detect wheel slippage.  New for 2016, torque transfer to the rear wheels starts from the moment the steering wheel is turned to reduce the load on the front tires in all Drive Modes (previously only in Sport Mode on 2015 AWD RAV4s). If wheel slip occurs, the system transfers up to 50 percent of torque to the rear wheels to reduce front tire loading, thereby enhancing lateral grip. Pushing an AWD Lock button fixes torque distribution at 50:50 at speeds up to about 25 mph to help maximize grip for off-pavement driving or slippery conditions. Above that speed, the system reverts to Auto mode.

Inner Strength
A body structure that makes extensive use of high-strength steel provides a robust and stiff, yet light platform and is the foundation for the RAV4’s smooth ride, handling agility and cabin quietness. The rear suspension member has increased spots welds and support mounts to help enhance rigidity and reduce vibration transfer to the vehicle occupants. The MacPherson strut front suspension and double-wishbone rear suspension let the RAV4 absorb bumps, ruts and railroad crossings with composure. A strut tower bar links the tops of the front strut towers to the main bulkhead, helping to increase torsional rigidity.

Front and rear shock absorbers and coils have been retuned in all RAV4 grades to help enhance stability and increase comfort. The SE grade receives unique sport-tuned shock absorbers and coils for enhanced sport driving composure.

Vehicle-speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion electric power steering provides precision feel and quick response, and it has no messy hydraulic fluid to be checked or changed. The RAV4 LE rolls on standard 17-inch steel wheels with wheel covers and P225/65R17 all-season tires. The XLE Hybrid upgrades to unique 17-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels with 225/65R17 tires and XLE gas rides on 18-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels with 235/55R18 tires, while the Limited and SE grades get 18-inch alloy wheels with P235/55R18 all-season tires.

Cavernous Cabin
The easy-to-maneuver, easy-to-park RAV4 takes up little space outside but offers cavernous space inside. There’s ample room for five adults, including competitive 37.2 inches of rear legroom and, behind the rear seat, 38.4 cu. ft. of cargo capacity (35.6 cu. ft. for Hybrid). With the 60/40 split rear seats folded, that space expands to 73.4 cu. ft. (70.6 cu. ft. for Hybrid). The rear seatbacks recline several degrees for added passenger comfort, and rear privacy glass is standard on all RAV4 models.

The RAV4 Limited brings in the luxury SofTex-trimmed seats, dash and door panels. The driver gets an eight-way power seat with memory and lumbar adjustment, and the front seats are two-stage heated. Added conveniences include the Smart Key system with push button start, remote power liftgate, a frameless auto-dimming rear-view mirror with Homelink® and SofTex-covered sliding center armrest with a console storage compartment.

Special attention was directed towards improving cabin quietness with the addition of sound insulation materials in the rear cargo area, floor pan, and side and rear doors to help reduce road noise and create a premium feel.

Tune in With Entune
There’s no shortage of music and information choices in the 2016 RAV4, thanks to a line of four available Entune™ audio systems. In the RAV4 LE, the standard Entune Audio system features a 6.1-in. touchscreen, AM/FM/CD, Bluetooth® hands-free phone connectivity and audio streaming,  iPod® connectivity and control, USB 2.0, AUX mini-jack, Advanced Voice Recognition, and six speakers. The Stars Come Out For Toyota at 2015 SEMA Show

The Stars Come Out For Toyota at 2015 SEMA Show

The Stars Come Out For Toyota at 2015 SEMA Show

Celebrities Onsite at the Toyota Booth for Autographs
October 29, 2015
TORRANCE, Calif., (Oct. 29, 2015) — There will be stars as bright as the cars around them at Toyota’s 2015 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show display. Autograph and photo opportunities will be available at select times from Tuesday, November 3, through Thursday, November 5.

The celebrity sightings will begin immediately following Toyota’s press conference, which will be held from 10:00 to 10:20 a.m. on Tuesday, November 3.

Rutledge Wood
Chief among the luminaries will be Rutledge Wood, who will emcee the press conference itself. Wood has been one of the co-hosts of Top Gear USA on television’s History channel for the past four seasons. Earlier this year, he debuted on History’s Lost in Transmission, in which he and his co-host George travel the country is search of America’s forgotten automotive classics in an attempt to tell their stories and get them back on the road for their deserving owners.

Wood also joined NBC Sports as a specialty motorsports reporter and NASCAR analyst in early 2015.

But Wood’s roots in motorsports go back many more years than that. His first experience in NASCAR came during his first job in entertainment: traveling with the NASCAR circuit for Country Music Television. Soon after, he was hired by Speed TV (now Fox Sports 1), where he worked for 10 seasons covering NASCAR. He was a correspondent for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series pre-race show, NASCAR RaceDay, and has hosted or co-hosted various NASCAR shows and events for Fox Sports, including Speed Road Tour ChallengeNASCAR Smarts, and NASCAR Live, as well as the annual NASCAR Awards Banquet.

Rutledge Wood will be available for autographs, photos and interviews starting at 10:20 a.m. on Tuesday, November 3.

Ryan Millen
Also in attendance on Tuesday, November 3, will be Ryan Millen, a member of the legendary
Millen racing family who is currently having a very successful season driving a 2015 Toyota RAV4 in the Rally America series.

Millen is the son of off-road racing and rally icon Rod Millen, and has a history with Toyota that stretches back to his childhood, including racing in the MTEG stadium series at the age of nine, racing an FJ Cruiser in the Baja 1000, and winning the Baja 1000 in a Toyota Tundra TRD Pro.

Like Wood, Millen will be available for photos and interviews beginning at 10:20 a.m. on Tuesday, November 3, immediately following Toyota’s press conference.

Antron Brown
Drag racing pioneer Antron Brown will also be available for autograph seekers following Toyota’s press conference.

Currently driving the Matco Tools Toyota in NHRA’s Top Fuel division, he is known for winning the 2012 Top Fuel championship and winning six Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event titles in 2014.

He is perhaps best known as a pioneer in the sport of drag racing, its first African-American champion. In February 2013, he was featured on NBC’s Today show when he was named one of TheGrio.com’s list of 100 African-American industry, sports and community leaders. Later that year, he was honored—along with other renowned athletes like Terry Bradshaw, James Worthy, Dave Winfield and Nick Faldo—at the 28th annual Great Sports Legends ceremony.

Mike Iaconelli
Rounding out the group of four celebrities who will be available following Toyota’s Tuesday, November 3, press conference will be professional bass fisherman Mike Iaconelli.

Iaconelli was the 2003 Bassmaster Classic champion and, more pertinently, the 2006 Toyota Tundra Angler of the Year. Most recent among his many victories was his win at the 2014 Bassmaster Elites on the Delaware River.

Of Iaconelli, The New York Times wrote, “He’s not one of the old-style fishermen. He is a fast-talking, intense, summa cum laude graduate of Rowan University.” Those qualities will all be on display at Toyota’s SEMA booth twice during the course of SEMA. In addition to appearing beginning at 10:20 a.m. on Tuesday, November 3, Iaconelli will make a return visit from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Wednesday, November 4.

Gerald Swindle
On Thursday, November 5, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, Toyota display visitors will be greeted by Gerald Swindle, another legendary bassmaster and winner of the Toyota Tundra Angler of the Year title in 2004.

Swindle is often referred to as both “The G-Man” and “bass fishing’s funniest man.” His professional career began in April 1998, when he won the $150,000 first price at a Fishing League Worldwide event on Beaver Lake, Arkansas.

Six years later, Swindle achieved bass fishing’s highest accolade when he won the Toyota Tundra Angler of the Year title.

SEMA visitors can enjoy Swindle’s wit and wisdom on Thursday, November 5.

All of the stars—along with 16 Toyota specialty vehicles—can be found in the Toyota display booth (#24700) in Central Hall at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Toyota Gets Down and Dirty in Action-Packed Marketing Campaign for the All-New 2016 Tacoma

Toyota Gets Down and Dirty in Action-Packed Marketing Campaign for the All-New 2016 Tacoma

Toyota Gets Down and Dirty in Action-Packed Marketing Campaign for the All-New 2016 Tacoma

Campaign Underscores Tacoma's Extreme Adaptability and Tougher-than-Nails Capabilities, Appealing to the Adventurer's Insatiable Appetite for Defying Limitations
October 05, 2015
TORRANCE, Calif., Oct. 5, 2015 – If your heart doesn’t beat a little faster after watching the all-new Toyota Tacoma broadcast spots, you might want to check your pulse.

America’s best-selling, midsize pickup takes off-roading to new heights in the latest multicultural campaign delivered by Toyota and its advertising agencies Saatchi & Saatchi Los Angeles and Conill. Debuting today, the Tacoma creative targets those addicted to authentic, adventurous living without boundaries, where dirt clouds and mud sprays are rites of passage.

“I’m totally pumped that Toyota is introducing an all-new generation of the Tacoma,” says Jack Hollis, group vice president of Marketing, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. “Tacoma is already the top-selling midsize pickup in America, and the 2016 builds off the off-road heritage of the last generation, while giving guests the opportunity to take it along as they experience things as never before. I’m really excited for the road ahead.”

Call of the Wild
Two broadcast spots will be unleashed, beginning today. One of the spots, shot in one take, features a multitude of professional motocross riders and stunt people unapologetically taking aim at the dust-filled landscape alongside the Tacoma. The other spot focuses on a group of thrill-seekers enjoying the dirtier side of life and relishing in the Tacoma spirit.

The fun, fearless and rugged creative approach aligns with Toyota’s “Let’s Go Places” theme and encourages play in the great outdoors.

Complementing the spots, social media elements of the campaign include a series of dynamic videos, which use the latest in visual and targeting technology to showcase the Tacoma in action.  On Facebook and Twitter the videos speak directly to target consumers by focusing on their interests, specifically: BMX racing, dirt bikes, ATV, snowboarding and snowmobiling.

Instagram activations will deploy snippets of slow motion video, shot in bullet time with 4k technology, that graphically highlight the grittiness of the Tacoma in off-roading action from different angles.

Additionally on Instagram, a stop-motion video pays tribute to Tacoma owners and trucks at play. Tacoma owners are encouraged to submit their Instagram photos to possibly be featured in the series of videos.

“This has to be one of my favorite campaigns since I arrived here a year ago. It was so much fun to get a little dirty and create authentic content that emulates what the Tacoma is all about,” says Jason Schragger, chief creative officer, Saatchi & Saatchi Los Angeles. “We not only wanted to ignite the passion for exploring the great outdoors, but also show that playing in the mud should never get old, even when you become an adult.”

The Tacoma broadcast spots aim to connect with the liberating, adventure-seeking culture that dreams of dares and fears nothing, the young and young-at-heart who live on the edge. The tougher and more adaptable their truck, the more fun they will have. In fact, while on set at one of the shoots, the featured Tacoma didn’t even make contact with soap and water; the crew kept it down and dirty to maintain the authenticity of the vehicle’s off-roading escapades.

The Science of Fun
In addition to the main path of the campaign, Toyota’s Hispanic marketing agency, Conill, has added another online leg to the journey, one that focuses on the Latino market.

Using culturally relevant insights and a little competition, “Sal a Jugar” (Go Out & Play) highlights hard working Latinos who reward themselves by seeking out new adventures.  The objective: to measure the level of fun participants had driving the Tacoma. Special wristbands monitored the electrodermal activity of each person on competing teams during a series of outdoor challenges.

“We as Latinos tend to more closely associate this vehicle class with work and business than other groups,” says Javier Campopiano, chief creative officer, Conill. “This led us to a surprising idea to show our guests how much fun the all-new Tacoma can be. Putting some real science behind it adds another dimension to the experience. It’s an interesting twist for the category.”

Launching Oct. 5, a 2-minute video will chronicle the experience from start to finish, while snippets are seeded across social media and digital channels. Each “snackable” video will focus on an engaging piece of the experiment, encouraging viewers to watch the full story on YouTube.

To complete the journey, consumers can check out additional Tacoma content at Toyota.com.

It will be priced at $19,685, excluding a delivery, processing and handling fee of $795.

The 2015 xB 686 Parklan Edition incorporates seats with the quilted patterning and modern cubist camo style reflecting 686’s design influence. Gloss black 16-inch alloy wheels featuring the 686 stamped logo tie in with the black-out badges, side mirrors, rear license plate garnish and door handles.

On the outside, the Cocoa Bean Metallic paint is accented with red lines in the front, rear and on the side mirrors to capture 686’s brand.

For added functionality on the slopes, there is an incognito driver’s side zippered storage pocket and zippered seat back pockets. Each xB 686 Parklan Edition also comes with all-weather floor and cargo mats. Additionally, a custom INNO Cargo Box and Roof Rack system is available.

“The xB has been part of Scion from the very beginning and we wanted to give it a meaningful send-off,” said Scion Vice President Andrew Gilleland. “What better way to do that than to partner with 686, which caters to people who live their lives to the fullest? Whether it’s used on the streets or the slopes, this xB will become a classic.”

Scion and 686 first worked together in 2011 with a Numeric xB show car designed with snowboarders in mind. That relationship has continued through the years, culminating in this special edition model.

“Before we designed this car, we took an xB on a three-week road trip from California to Boston and we captured the action in our movie, 686 Seconds,” said Brent Sandor, 686 Director of Marketing. “By taking the car from the city to the mountains and back again, we learned the xB can handle adverse conditions inside and out. With a cargo box on top and all-weather floor and cargo mats on the inside, it was the perfect inspiration for our special edition collaboration.”

Sienna Takes Number Two Spot in Annual American-Made Index

June 29, 2015
ERLANGER, Ky., June 29, 2015 – The results are in, and Cars.com has named two Toyota models as most American-Made.

The Toyota Camry and the Toyota Sienna have claimed the top two spots, respectively, in the annual Cars.com American-Made Index. This marks Toyota’s return to the American-Made pinnacle for the first time in three years and the fifth time overall that Camry has been ranked number one on the index.

According to Cars.com, the “American-Made Index rates vehicles built and bought in the United States. Factors include the percentage of parts considered “domestic” under federal regulations, whether the car is assembled in the U.S. and U.S. sales. Models with domestic-parts content ratings below 75 percent are disqualified, as well as models built exclusively outside the U.S. or models soon to be discontinued without a U.S.-built successor.”

“These results are a testament to Toyota’s continued investment and growth in the United States,” said Toyota North America CEO Jim Lentz, who also serves as President of Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing, North America, Inc. “We are strengthening our commitments to American manufacturing so we can better satisfy the needs of our customers for decades to come.”

The Toyota Camry, America’s best-selling car for 13 consecutive years, comes out of Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc. (TMMK) in Georgetown, Ky. alongside the Camry Hybrid, Avalon and Avalon Hybrid. TMMK is Toyota’s largest manufacturing facility in North America, which also builds engines and employs more than 7,500. The plant built its 10-millionth vehicle in 2014 and will begin adding the Lexus ES to its lines this fall, the first Lexus to be manufactured in the United States. The addition of Lexus is the hallmark of a $360 million investment in the plant that also adds 750 new jobs.

The Sienna is assembled in Princeton, Ind. at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana, Inc. (TMMI) by a team of 5,000. The plant also produces the Sequoia and Highlander/Highlander Hybrid. Toyota is investing $100 million in TMMI to boost Highlander production, adding 30,000 units per year and 300 jobs by summer 2016.

Much of the design and engineering of both Camry and Sienna took place in the United States at Calty Design Research, Inc. and Toyota Technical Center (TTC), respectively. Calty is headquartered in Newport Beach, Calif., with a production design studio in Ann Arbor, Mich., and TTC is based in York Township, Mich. Camry and Sienna both have American chief engineers.

Toyota has 10 manufacturing facilities in the United States.

Toyota Moves up 57 Spots from Last Year
June 04, 2015
PLANO, Texas (June 4, 2015) – Newsweek has named a car company as one of the world’s greenest companies, ahead of highly-regarded brands like Microsoft, Google, Nike and Coke. Toyota moved up 57 spots in Newsweek’s annual green ranking to #35 in the Global 500 and #2 in autos.
Newsweek in partnership with Corporate Knights Capital and HIP Investor evaluated the world's largest publicly-traded companies, using eight metrics to measure environmental performance. Companies were scored against their industry peers on each metric, including energy, water and waste levels.
“We are proud to be recognized as one of the world’s greenest companies,” said Jim Lentz, Toyota Motor North America chief executive officer. “Through continuous improvement, our global teams have made great strides in reducing our environmental impact. From hybrids to fuel cells, Toyota is at the forefront of developing energy efficient technologies. We are deeply committed to contributing to the environment, our communities, and to leading the future of sustainable mobility.”

2015 Toyota Summer Driving Tips

2015 Toyota Summer Driving Tips

Summer Safety 101: Getting Your Ride Road Trip Ready

June 03, 2015
Whether historic U.S. Route 1 is your main vacation drag or you’re cruising for a day on Pacific Coast Highway or motoring west on the route that’s the best, summer means one thing to many Americans…road trip.

Before you sally forth, you might want to tackle a few technical “to dos” to ensure your trip is as smooth as your driving style.

  1. Total recall.  Similar to getting an annual physical from the doctor, it’s smart to stay in the know about your vehicle.
To find out if a vehicle has been involved in a safety recall or service campaign, Toyota owners can check their vehicle identification number (VIN) – found on the driver’s side dashboard or driver’s side door where it latches – at http://www.toyota.com/recall. They can also use the owner’s app (available through iTunes or Google play) to scan in their VIN.

To check out a vehicle from another manufacturer, owners can access thehttps://vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin/

If your vehicle is involved in a safety recall, the manufacturer is obligated to provide a free remedy; so contact your local dealer and make an appointment to handle the issue.

  1. No tired tires. Before taking those tires on the road, focus on: air, wear and spare.
    • Air – A properly inflated tire can help you avoid a flat. Refer to the owner’s manual or a label inside the doorframe for the correct pressure and check tires when they’re cold (haven’t been driven on for three hours) for most accurate reading.
    • Wear – Take five minutes to inspect for excessive or irregular wear. If tread is worn to 1/16 of an inch, it’s time to replace. Irregular wear patterns indicate tires might need rotation or realignment.
    • Spare – Make sure the back-up has your back and run the spare through the same tests as your other tires.

  1. Take care for rubber wear. Inspect belts, hoses and wiper blades for blisters, cracks or cuts. All are susceptible to summer heat, so replace if not in tip-top condition. And make sure hose connections are secure.

  1. Get plenty of fluids. Be good to your trusted steed and follow up on fluids: oil, brake, automatic transmission, power steering, windshield washer and coolant.  And if it’s time to have the oil changed or coolant system flushed, just do it.

  1. Light it up. Check headlights, brake lights, turn signals, emergency flashers, interior and trailer lights.

  1. Be cool.  AC working? Check.  ‘Nuff said.

Toyota Sienna Honored at Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Toyota Sienna Honored at Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Cambridge, Mass., May 26, 2015 – With up to 150 cubic feet of cargo space, the Toyota Sienna has plenty of room for storage. Which is good because it is acquiring a growing load of hardware – and awards can be bulky!

The 2015 Sienna took home the Best in Class Minivan Award at the fifth annual New England Motor Press Association (NEMPA) Technology Conference, organized by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and NEMPA.

Toyota’s award haul from the NEMPA conference includes the WheelsTV Previously Owned Vehicle Award for the 2006-2012 RAV4, which was chosen from a group of ten finalists. The RAV4, redesigned in 2013, has a history of providing owners the comfort that has long been associated with Toyota vehicles. It was one of the first small SUVs and remains a leader in the intensely competitive compact crossover segment.

This year’s conference focused on green vehicle technology and included a panel of experts who examined fuel economy, emissions reduction, and innovation in green vehicle technologies beyond tax rebates, mandates and the pressure of high oil and gas prices. Robert Wimmer, Director of Energy & Environmental Research at Toyota Manufacturing North America, shared details about Toyota’s hydrogen fuel cell technology.

The 2015 Sienna holds true to its “Swagger Wagon” credentials. A more stylish interior – including a more comfortable and entertaining cockpit area, functional usage of cargo space and intelligent infotainment system – makes everyone a VIP. The exterior is refreshed with a restyled front grille and updated headlights and taillights. The Sienna is the only minivan in its class to offer available All-Wheel Drive.

And with EPA-estimated 18/25 mpg (city/highway), the Sienna will get you where you need to go – maybe even before someone in the back seat says, “Are we there yet?”
