Feb. 19, 2014 – This winter – one of the worst on record – has left many people in the dark, literally, with millions experiencing power outages during the last few months.  But what if a car, or parts of it, could provide power during an emergency?  Toyota engineers are looking for “enlightened” ways to do just that. 

Fuel Cell Connection
Toyota’s fuel cell vehicle will hit U.S. roads in 2015.  Highly efficient while producing zero emissions, a fully fueled vehicle has enough juice to power a small house for a week in an emergency. Engineers are currently working to develop an external power supply device to connect the car to the house and help keep the lights on.    

Powered by Prius (and Other Hybrids)
Toyota has millions of hybrids on the road around the world.  From Prius to Highlander to Camry, they have one thing in common – batteries.  In Japan, Toyota has given new life to those old hybrid battery packs as stationary power storage systems.  In use since 2013, the units provide peak power to Toyota dealerships around the country.

And Toyota Motor Manufacturing Alabama (TMMAL) is now studying this used battery power system to help power their operations and provide back-up power during an emergency.  As one of Toyota’s model sustainable North American plants, it’s fitting for TMMAL to be the first U.S. facility to flip this switch.

Toyota Begins to Export U.S.-Built Highlander SUVs to Australia, New Zealand and Eastern Europe

CHICAGO (Feb. 6, 2014) – Toyota today announced it has begun to export U.S.-assembled Highlander SUVs to Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan. Highlander exports are initially forecasted at approximately 29,000 units annually. The announcement was made by Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A., Inc. Senior Vice President Bob Carter at the Midwest Automotive Media Association’s annual breakfast during the Chicago Auto Show. These Highlander SUVs will be produced by team members at Toyota’s manufacturing plant in Princeton, Ind.
Representing a $4.2 billion investment, the plant currently employs about 4,500 team members; an additional 200 team members will be hired by year-end to help meet demand. The Princeton plant also produces the Sequoia full-size SUV and Sienna minivan.
These new shipments allow for better utilization of the Indiana plant, and help capitalize on the improving North American and global auto market. In addition to the new jobs created at the Indiana plant, this project increases opportunities and jobs for Toyota’s North American supply base.
Toyota began exporting U.S.-assembled vehicles in 1988, and now exports U.S.-assembled vehicles to 32 countries around the world. These exports increased in calendar year 2013 to more than 130,000 units – a 5% increase from 2012 and an all-time high for Toyota.
“We are proud that the U.S.-built Highlander has garnered so much interest not only here, but abroad,” said Mr. Carter.
“The export of Highlander SUVs to Australia, New Zealand and Eastern Europe helps maintain Toyota’s strong, stable base of U.S. jobs, and is the result of the great work of our talented U.S. team members and our extensive investments across North America. We look forward to other opportunities to continue expanding exports from our U.S. operations.”
Highlander exports began in late December. Exports to Australia and New Zealand are being shipped from Baltimore, Md. while exports to Eastern Europe are being shipped from Brunswick, Ga.

2014 Scion iQ Earns All-Around Honors from Automotive Science Group

TORRANCE, Calif., (Feb. 4, 2014) – Conscientious buyers can feel confident about the 2014 Scion iQ. The Automotive Science Group (ASG) analyzed thousands of social, environmental and economic data points and named Scion’s compact four-seater to its 2014 Best All-Around Performance list.

The California-based (Santa Rosa) policy consulting group compared 97 mini-compact cars to determine its top five vehicles in this category. Factors included:

• Raw materials acquisition
• Human rights and labor laws where vehicles are assembled
• Environmental factors
• Purchase price
• Operating and fuel costs

The 2014 Toyota Yaris also made the awards list in the same category.

“More and more of today’s buyers consider a company’s values and operations important pieces of their purchase decisions,” said Scion Vice President Doug Murtha. “The iQ demonstrates Scion’s commitment to diverse, fun options that fit with our drivers’ lifestyles and priorities.”

This year’s ASG award marks back-to-back wins for the iQ. The world’s smallest four-seater at just 10 feet long, it achieves outstanding space efficiency and delivers an EPA-estimated 36 mpg rating in the city, 37 mpg on the highway and 37 mpg combined EPA rating.  Dual VVT-i engine technology and a continuously variable transmission help maximize fuel efficiency and generate fewer emissions.

TORRANCE, Calif., (Feb. 4, 2014) - With a 40 mpg EPA city rating and expressive sport styling, the new Camry Hybrid SE Limited Edition offers fans of America’s best-selling car an exciting new variant for the 2014.5 model year. This limited edition model combines many of the popular Camry SE grade’s desirable appearance features with the renowned efficiency of Toyota Hybrid Synergy drive.  The new Camry Hybrid SE Limited Edition is powered by a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine and hybrid system with nickel metal hydride battery that yields a total system output of 200hp.

Building on the Camry XLE Hybrid’s equipment level, the new Camry Hybrid SE Limited Edition adds:

• Camry SE front fascia, headlights, side rockers, rear valance, rear bumper, rear spoiler, and 17-inch wheels with low profile tires to embolden this sedan’s exterior.
•  The Camry Hybrid SE’s interior is also equipped with the four-spoke, leather-trimmed, steering wheel, silver interior trim, instrument panel, center stack trim, and  front and rear seats from the Camry SE grade.  

The Hybrid SE will be available in the full palette of Camry SE exterior and interior hues while unique
badging will identify these special vehicles.

The 2014.5 Camry Hybrid SE Limited Edition arrives in showrooms later this month with an MSRP of $27,845.  An available upgrade package ($2215) includes a moonroof and Display Audio with Navigation and Entune Apps Suite. Production of the Camry Hybrid SE Limited Edition will run from February to June of 2014 and will be limited to 5000 units.
